In recent posts, we've been focused on understanding the classification of the signs into the Elements of Nature: Fire, Earth, Air, and Water. We also discussed how these elements support and complement one another to bring harmony to our lives. Today, we're going to start talking about the connection between the signs and the seasons of the year.

Initially, the Zodiac was created to bring greater precision to the calculations of the planets' location in the celestial sphere. For this purpose, an imaginary circle was created and subdivided into 12 equal parts: the signs. Each sign was named according to the constellation through which the Sun passed during its apparent path across the sky. It's always important to remember that a sign is not the same thing as a constellation. The constellations inspired the signs, but they are different things.

When we think about how Astrology was born, we usually say it was the moment a person looked up at the sky and, for the first time, wanted to establish a relationship between what was happening in the celestial sphere and what was happening on Earth. Thus, it was from the observation of the Sun's apparent trajectory through the ecliptic that the connection between the signs and the seasons began to be made. The symbolism of the Zodiac is a product of human experience related to the annual cycles and the changing landscape of vegetation, particularly in the temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere, where Astrology was born.

Zodiac comes from the Greek word "zoe," which means life. It is the cycle of life.

The cycle of life begins with Aries, the first sign of the Zodiac. It's interesting to note that the Sun's entry into the sign of Aries marks the beginning of the Astrological New Year, coinciding with the Spring Equinox in the Northern Hemisphere. From there, the Sun crosses all the signs of the zodiacal mandala until it reaches the last sign, Pisces.

In this sense, each sign is associated with a specific point in the seasons. We call this classification the Modalities, or Rhythms of the Zodiac. This classification divides the signs into three groups: the signs that begin a season, the signs that represent the middle and peak of the season, and finally, the signs that make the transition from one season to the next, closing one cycle and preparing for the new one.

  • The signs that begin the season are the Cardinal signs: Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn.

  • The signs of the peak of the season are the Fixed signs: Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius.

  • The signs of the end of the season and transition to the next are the Mutable signs: Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces.

To help you visualize it better, I'll list the approximate dates below. An important note: these dates are approximate, as the year has 365 days and a few hours, so we always have an adjustment in these calculations. Just think about the leap year and how everything changes.

Approximate Dates:

March 20 - The Sun in the sign of Aries, Spring Equinox in the Northern Hemisphere, and Autumn Equinox in the Southern Hemisphere

April 20 - The Sun in the sign of Taurus - the peak of the season

May 20 - The Sun in the sign of Gemini - the end of the season

June 20 - The Sun in the sign of Cancer, Summer Solstice in the Northern Hemisphere, and Winter Solstice in the Southern Hemisphere

July 22 - The Sun in the sign of Leo - the peak of the season

August 22 - The Sun in the sign of Virgo - the end of the season

September 22 - The Sun in the sign of Libra, Autumn Equinox in the Northern Hemisphere and Spring Equinox in the Southern Hemisphere

October 22 - The Sun in the sign of Scorpio - the peak of the season

November 21 - The Sun in the sign of Sagittarius - the end of the season

December 21 - The Sun in the sign of Capricorn, Winter Solstice in the Northern Hemisphere, and Summer Solstice in the Southern Hemisphere

January 20 - The Sun in the sign of Aquarius - the peak of the season

February 18 - The Sun in the sign of Pisces - the end of the season

Therefore, it is wonderful to realize that delving into astrological knowledge is a way to reconnect with the cycles of life, nature, and the seasons of the year. That's why I see Astrology as connected to such a powerful and loving feminine force.
