The Elements in the Zodiac

In the previous post, we discussed the classification of signs through polarities. Continuing a bit further on that subject, today we’ll talk about the Elements.

In ancient times, the Zodiac was often called the "Soul of Nature" because it contained the vital energies that compose all of Creation. All living substances—plants, animals, humans, etc.—result from the combination of these energies. Astrology is a means for understanding these vital principles, and to access this essence, it is necessary to fully understand the elements and how their energies operate.

The ruling element of each sign points to the type of consciousness that energy holds and the way it perceives the world. In other words, it serves as its "filter"—its lens for reality, and each of the elements perceives reality differently.

• FIRE signs express the radiant principle of life, which can manifest as enthusiasm, love, or ego.

  
  

• AIR signs are related to the expression of the mind, especially forms of abstract thought.

  
  

• EARTH signs reveal an attunement to the world of physical, concrete forms and a practical ability to utilize the material world.

  
  

• WATER signs represent the healing and soothing principle of sensitivity, desires, reactions, and feelings.

Based on the predominant element in one's chart, each person expresses themselves and also perceives the reality around them. This is why some people (some signs) are more active, others more peaceful, more conciliatory, or more "down-to-earth."

Of course, we are not made of a single element or even influenced by a single sign, but having knowledge of these energies and how they operate is what supports us in understanding important points within our charts and our lives.
