Today, we're going to talk about the Earth Element.

This element is associated with the Yin polarity: Lunar, nighttime, and receptive energy. It is composed of three signs: Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn.

An attunement to this element indicates that the individual is in touch with the physical senses and the here-and-now reality of the material world. Earth signs tend to rely more on their senses and practical reasoning than on inspiration, theoretical considerations, or intuition. They are tuned into the world of "forms" that the senses and the practical mind regard as real, and the innate understanding of how the material world works gives these signs the qualities of patience and self-discipline.

This energy has a strength of resistance and persistence that ensures people of Earth signs are always capable of taking care of themselves. Due to their efficiency, they are capable not only of speaking but also of acting in a very practical way to ensure that the things they worked for are not taken from them. The Earth element tends to be cautious, premeditated, and quite conventional.

They rarely need to be told how to adapt to the world to earn a living, how to meet their basic needs, or how to persist until a goal is reached. All of these qualities come naturally to the Earth Element. They have the experience of waiting for the reality of their own life.

This is an element we are in contact with all the time. We live on Earth.

All our reality is based on what we can perceive objectively. So, Earth speaks of that reality we can experience through the five senses: what we can see, what we can touch—everything that is empirically experienced. Therefore, they are signs that, when learning a concept or idea, worry about the practical application of that theory, the utility of that knowledge, and question "what are things for?"

That is why they are very connected to the world we live in, this world where we need to work, and work is what will produce the resources for us to pay our bills and meet our needs. So, there is this connection to the reality of life itself.

These are people very connected to issues of time and space limits, the limits of their own bodies. This, of course, is when it doesn't go to the extremes of the workaholic who often forgets the limits of their own body in favor of achieving a goal. It is an energy very connected to labor, which understands that some sacrifices are necessary to achieve what one desires. That's where this strength of determination and perseverance to pursue everything they long for comes from.

I have a wonderful Capricorn friend. One day, she called another friend, a Gemini, inviting her to go to the market, and off the two went. At a certain point, they split up to find things at different stalls. The Gemini walked around, talking to the vendors she already knew, getting to know new stalls and all the novelties there, until after a while she called her Capricorn friend and said:

"Hey, where are you?"

The Capricorn replied:

"What do you mean? I'm already home!"

"How are you already home?" the Gemini responded.

"Yes. I had my list, I did the most efficient route through the market to be efficient, I bought everything I needed, and I came home."

Now, for the Gemini, it was obvious that the market was not just about fulfilling obligations. It was for strolling, having fun... From this, you can observe the differences between these two energies.

Dealing with an Excess of Earth

If you're identifying a lot with all of this, maybe you have an excess of these energies in your chart and are a very objective, pragmatic person, super focused on reality. The excess of this can be a bit hard; these may be people who take life too seriously or are extreme workaholics.

Therefore, these people need to take a pause, to do some activity that promotes this contact with their interior, with depth, and not just with palpable reality. As that phrase says: "Understanding that there is much more between heaven and Earth than is dreamt of in your philosophy." So, it's important to have this contact with oneself. This can be through Therapy or an artistic activity.

For example, I, Kim, have an excess of Earth in my chart, and the way I found to deal with it was Yoga. The practice of Yoga provides a moment for me to have contact with myself, with my body, with my interior. Right afterward, I do a meditation practice that supports this connection with my feelings and thoughts. Furthermore, it works on the flexibility of the body, which I feel gets very rigid and blocked with the daily routine and work. So, yoga makes me move my body and brings me that fluidity.

Dealing with a Scarcity of Earth

But there might also be someone reading this text and thinking: "Where is my Earth? I don't have any of that!" In these cases, this person may have a lack of Earth in their chart. The lack of the Earth element can bring some challenges, such as a lack of skill in dealing with reality, forgetting that more objective part of the routine, the day-to-day, the schedule, and bills to pay.

One way to deal with this is to put some kind of discipline into your life. So, having a schedule and setting times for commitments can give some structure to the day-to-day and help in the connection with the Earth element, connecting us with reality.

Have you already managed to identify how Earth is in your chart?

Do you feel you have a lack? An excess? Or is it balanced?
