In Astrology, signs are classified by polarities, elements, and modalities. Today, we’re starting by talking about polarities. Astrological signs are classified into two polarities, and in this post, I'm going to explain this classification to you very briefly and simply. Let's go!
The First Polarity: Yang, Expansive Energy
The First Polarity speaks of expansion and self-expression. It is an energy that pours itself out into the world. It is linked to:
FIRE signs (Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius), which pour themselves out or express themselves through action.
AIR signs (Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius), which pour themselves out through verbal expression and interaction with others.
This energy is highly associated with Jung's concept of extroversion.
The Second Polarity: Yin, Receptive Energy
The Second Polarity speaks of a more passive energy, but passive in the sense of being receptive and open. It is considered a self-repressive energy, in the sense of what is contained within oneself. These signs are focused on their feelings and thoughts, and only dare to put this energy out there when they feel secure. In other words, there is no outpouring without consideration and caution, as often happens with the extroverted energy. This polarity is closely associated with Jung's concept of introversion.
The signs that have a predominance of this energy are:
WATER signs (Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces), which express themselves through feelings.
EARTH signs (Capricorn, Taurus, and Virgo), which express themselves through practicality/rationality.
Polarities Across Cultures
These two polarities are also very close to the Chinese philosophy concepts of Yang and Yin:
Yang: Solar, daytime energy, active force, expansion (First Polarity).
Yin: Lunar, nighttime energy, receptive (Second Polarity).
Two other concepts that are also associated with these two polarities are the Greek concepts of the Apollonian energy—associated with the god Apollo, god of the sun, consciousness, and reason... so it is an energy that brings light. And on the other side, the Dionysian energy—associated with the god Dionysus, god of wine, ecstasy, and the release of instincts... which would then be a more instinctive and unconscious, internal energy.
As you can see, the concepts involving polarities are present in various writings and teachings across many cultures, and in astrology, we use this knowledge to bring more information and tools for your development.
