Pairing wines with zodiac signs? Yes, absolutely. And when the subject is Scorpio, the experience gains even deeper layers.
Back in 2011, I came across a feature story that marked my journey: “Sommelière Cecília Aldaz pairs wines and signs.” I clipped it and saved it, feeling that there was a poetic truth there—after all, some grapes possess the same magnetism and complexity as certain signs. Scorpio is one of them. Intense. Deep. Transformative. And its grape could be no other.
🦂 The Scorpio grape? SEMILLON!
Scorpios are ruled by deep, silent waters. They feel more than they show. They carry a sharp sixth sense and have a visceral relationship with love, desire, and surrender. They go through processes of death and rebirth throughout their lives, yet they remain whole—or perhaps, even more powerful.
The Semillon grape mirrors this nature perfectly. Misunderstood at first glance, this grape holds a transformative power. Under specific, often extreme conditions, it delivers one of the most iconic wines in the world: Sauternes, a French dessert wine born from noble rot (yes, literally) that turns into liquid gold.
Just like Scorpio, Semillon moves between light and shadow, between death and rebirth, between chaos and the sublime.
It is sensual, emotional, with captivating aromas and a long-lasting presence. In love with beauty, but not perfection.
🍷 What is wine made from Semillon like?
According to the Wine Folly: The Essential Guide to Wine, Semillon produces full-bodied white wines with an unctuous texture and striking aromas. When aged on the lees or in oak barrels, it develops deep notes of custard, vanilla, honey, butter, and dried fruits—all wrapped in a subtle acidity that balances and enchants.
It expresses itself well in both dry and sweet wines, but it is in the dessert wines that it reveals its most mystical and memorable facet. It’s the kind of wine you don’t forget. Nor do you want to.
🌑 A wine with a Scorpio soul
Scorpio invites us to dive deep. To leave the surface. To feel with courage. So does Semillon.
It challenges the common palate. It asks for presence, surrender, and intimacy. In return, it reveals flavors that touch the soul. Intense. Mysterious. Transformative. Like the love experienced by a Scorpio.
What about you? Did you feel this connection? Tell me in the comments. I’d love to know! 🥂
