Pairing wines with zodiac signs? Yes!
And this is one of those ideas that continues to delight me over time.
In 2011, I came across an article that I have treasured: “Sommelière Cecília Aldaz harmonizes wines and signs”. Since then, the connection between astrology and oenology has stayed with me — because, deep down, grapes also have a soul. And each wine brings a story that speaks to the nuances of the signs.
Today is the day to talk about Cancer, the sign that protects, nourishes, and feels deeply.
🦀 Cancer's grape? TEMPRANILLO!
Cancerians live with their hearts on their sleeves — even when they try to hide it behind protective shells. They are caring, nostalgic, guided by emotions, and deeply connected to their roots. They are like a welcoming home: they have a rich and affectionate inner world, which reveals itself only to those who know how to look delicately.
The Tempranillo grape translates this beautifully.
With a thick skin and delicate, aromatic pulp, it firmly protects its essence while delivering an admirable inner richness. It is vulnerable to climate change and likes to be at home — that is, in its native soil. When well cared for, it blooms elegantly and exudes a sweetness that is captivating.
Like Cancer natives, Tempranillo may seem discreet at first, but it holds within itself an enchanting depth.
🍷 What is wine made with Tempranillo like?
According to the Essential Wine Guide - Wine Folly, Tempranillo produces full-bodied red wines, with present tannins and an intense ruby color, the result of the high concentration of anthocyanins.
The aroma is rich in ripe red fruits, sometimes with earthy notes or even a touch of vanilla, when aged in barrels. These are intense, welcoming, and exciting wines — perfect to be enjoyed calmly, alongside comfort food or even alone, in a moment of introspection.
They pair beautifully with dishes full of flavor and history, such as pasta with rustic sauce, roast meats, mushrooms, or cured cheeses.
🌿 A wine with a Cancerian soul
Cancer is the sign of care, memory, and emotional nourishment. Tempranillo is also like this: it carries the warmth of the earth, the shelter of tradition, and the power of feeling.
So, do you think this wine is right for you?
Tell me in the comments — I'd love to know! 🥂
With love,
